Hosting Advice Needed

I know this question is like opening up a bees nest and covering myself with honey but I need some advice on hosting. Here are my requirements:

  • VPS - Full Root Access (Remote Connection)
  • Decent RAM - 300-500mb worth at least
  • Moderate HD space (5-10gb)
  • Windows OS - No Linux

SQL Server is not mandatory - as long as I can install MySQL I'm good. That's really about it - just looking for something reliable, quick and easy.

I have my eyes on one host in particular, VPSLand. Any feedback whatsoever on them would be greatly appreciated. Their packages seem to fit my needs perfectly but I need some known testimonials before I pull the trigger.

I should have mentioned price - ~$30.

Any particular reason why "No linux"?

Just a comfort level thing really. If I can get Windows at the same price I'd rather have Windows, ya know?

Understood, just curious. :)

I have been trying out a few VPS providers (Windows based) over the last while and can't say I'm particularly keen on the idea of a Windows VPS now.

More than one host has said their virtualisation software kills off "non-essential" processes to keep the server running at less than 100% RAM usage (and avoids the use of paging files, so the shared drives don't get clobbered all the time).

It turned out that Coldfusion was a non-essential app, as was MySQL, and there was no way to stop them being closed down almost at random if they took up too much RAM. I found the whole experience very unstable, even with 1Gb of RAM allocated.

However this could get interesting if anyone else has any suggestions?

If you ever drop the 'no Linux' limitation, Slicehost are about the best value/service VPS provider in the universe. They're simply outstanding, and super good value. I've had my slice (er, VPS) with them for nearly a year now (and they only just turned a year old a few weeks ago), and have only had *one* problem, which will never happen again. Easily resolved anyway. But yeah, total freedom, on a shoestring budget.

But.. they're Linux. I wonder if you could install X and VMWare and run Windows inside of that :)

My VPS on VPSLand is down for 7 hours. I have submitted a ticket 5 hours ago when I realize the problem.

Still no solution.

I have to wait for them to resolve the issue just by submitting a support ticket. No phone, no other contact method.

I had a problem with VPSLand yesterday, but everything seems ok today. I noticed also that there is no phone number anywhere for them. Frustrating!

VPS is back after 13 hours. :)

Did they say what caused such a long outage?
# Posted By todd sharp | 5/9/08 12:45 AM
No.

And the tickets are still open in support system. :)

I think they had a big outage and still trying to resolve other issues and could not find the time to update tickets.

Must have been on a box that I'm not on. Thank goodness too, because all of my sites (this blog, cfsnippets.org, modelgluecookbook.com, slidesix.com) are all on my VPS!!
