How Many Domain Names Are You Holding Hostage?

I realize this is kinda pointless, but I logged into my GoDaddy account today for something and took a look at my domain names whilst I was in there. Of the 9 domains I own, I'm only actively using 4 of them. The others were either snagged up for a bright idea that I had at one point, dead sites or domains that I fully intend to use at some point.

How many do you own that you're doing nothing with, and why?

Steve Withington's Gravatar Too many ... and I'm reminded of that every time they come up for renewal.

todd sharp's Gravatar @steve: yet you renew them anyways? ;)

Pat's Gravatar I have about 30+. I don't get rid of them, because sometimes those "bright ideas" pop back in my head and by that time the domain is gone. Plus, I use the extra domains for testing apps so I don't have to remember the IP. There is one in particular that I had for 7 years. It was bought the same day it finally expired. It was by a rather large company, and I felt a little down because I could have sold it and got a new laptop or something. :) So -- I sit on them for now.

Dan Wilson's Gravatar I have over 30 myself. I renewed them all last year for a 10 year period.

Some people collect stamps, I guess I collect useless domain names.

todd sharp's Gravatar Wow it's people like you that I curse when I find a name that is taken! :D

Seriously, there are a few I've come across that I would have been willing to pay for but my attempts at contacting the owners were ignored.

Dan Wilson's Gravatar Well, I can understand the frustration. I am about to launch a lawsuit against a domain name holder precisely because they won't respond to my inquiries. I would have purchased the name for a fair amount to cover their investment. Now, I'll just wait until my trademark clears and sue them for it.

Anyways, because I like you Todd, and I think you are neat guy, I'll let you take your pick of my fine Domain Name collection. Any thing you want, is yours for a small (5,000$) fee.

todd sharp's Gravatar OK I'll take something preferably strongly related to any Fortune 500 company or celebrity.

phill.nacelli's Gravatar Dammit Dan...

I'm trying to purchase www.nodans.com you freaking hog!!

;)

Cheers..

Joshua Cyr's Gravatar I probably only have 10 or so not used. Maybe less.

Sometimes I get a random SMS from a friend out drinking saying 'OMG register this right away' and some domain, so I do it, only to find out it was just drunking excitement.

come to think of it, thats a good premise for a site. Drunkendomains.com

Joshua Cyr's Gravatar dang it. which one of you owns drunkendomains.com????

petron's Gravatar While I personally hate domain squatters, a client of ours (think Fortune 500) just bought and paid $15K for a domain name.

It kills me to hear that but some of the domains I'm squatting on might print me some money!! In all fairness, I only own 3 unused domains. :)

Jason Dean's Gravatar I hate people who squat on domains, since I name my children based on whether or not the domain name is available.

I have about 4 that I am not currently using. But I intend to!

Nathan Strutz's Gravatar I've got 3 domains total, and I'm only using one, dopefly.com. The other two, I have plans for, don't know what else to say. They're in the works, but have been for over a year now.

John Mason's Gravatar Actually have several related to FusionLink.com, to protect the brand and the trademark.

Way back in the day (pre-1995), I could have register my lastname (mason.com) but decided not to. Boy, I wish I had :)

George's Gravatar I think i just goes to show that it never hurts to contact the owner about buy a name...there is a good change it could be just parked and they forgot about it.

i myself have a few (5 or so) that i intent to used...or once did, that if someone asked i think i would be reasonable.
