Problems Installing Adobe AIR Apps On Vista? Try This

Lately I've been unable to install any AIR applications on Vista. When double clicking on the AIR file I'd be presented with the error:

Something went wrong trying to install this application. Please install the latest version of Adobe AIR from http://www.adobe.com/go/getair and then try again.
Which looks like this:

AIR error message on vista

So I tried to play along and go download AIR thinking that somehow I missed an update along the way. I was then greeted with this lovely message when I tried to install the new runtime:

This version of Adobe AIR is already installed on your system.

Which looks like this (if you're playing along at home):

air already installed

The solution was to find the Adobe AIR Application Installer.exe file, mine was located at:

\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe AIR\Versions\1.0\Adobe AIR Application Installer.exe

When you run the installer executable you will be able to browse and select the AIR application that you would like to install and the process should work as expected from there on out. You may have to right click the AIR Application Installer and 'Run As Administrator' if it doesn't work straight away.

A bit of a pain, but I'm glad I can at least install AIR apps again. Anyone know why I can't install them straightaway anymore?

Tiago Dias's Gravatar hmm.. that's weird.. I'm running Vista Business pro (32bit) and I never had any issues installing / uninstalling air apps.. Did that just started out of nowhere?

todd sharp's Gravatar Right around the time I tried to install Twhirl -- which I've also seen from others who've had this problem. Funny thing is it installed fine on my desktop, just not the laptop.

Dan's Gravatar I have this same problem and get the same error message. I am also running under Vista. I haven't found a solution yet either.

Shimju David's Gravatar I'm running Vista Business pro (32bit) and I use few AIR apps on daily basis.
I never found an issue installing or un-installing AIR apps on my Vista.

Krikor Ohannessian's Gravatar i tried your solution, still having the same problem, i tried different applications, not the same one, always getting the crash and the famous bluescreen

Jayden Lawson's Gravatar This fixes the problem if you actually have the .air file in your local fiels. But still doesn't solve the problem when there is only a "Download & Install" link on the Air applications website.

todd sharp's Gravatar @Jayden - you are correct and I've yet to find a solution. I'm sure the 'download and install' just puts the AIR package in a temp directory somewhere, I just haven't found it yet. Then again, I haven't dug around much yet either.

Peter's Gravatar Same problem here. Even though I found the Adobe AIR Application Installer.exe file... It opens a diologue box to select the app I want to install but then crashes halfway into the installation. Very frustrating. I suspect Vista is blocking it somewhere.

ikay hargley's Gravatar thanks, it worked!

CarlosAnglo's Gravatar Thanks for this. I've been working on this problem for days - your solution was perfect for my situation. Again - Thanks.

Greggeh's Gravatar Thanks for the solution!

Alejandro Angelico's Gravatar GREAT!!!!!!!!!!
I was looking for this solution for almost 1 hour!!!, in Adobe Site they just say (uh, it's a Vista problem, not solution yet...)

Thanks a lot.

GeorgiePorgie's Gravatar Just worked for me after spending all day trying to figure it out. Thanks for the help!

MacD's Gravatar This workaround only solves the problem when you already have an AIR file to work with. In many cases the AIR file can only be run from a web page so this solution can't help. Nothing definitive out there on the web that I have found :-(

Joel Canfield's Gravatar Bless you, this was driving me CRAZY!!!!

BirdDog's Gravatar Your solution worked for me. Thank you. (Why is it that Adobe
consistenly fails to avoid wasting our time by not
updating their installation pages with vital info
like yours?)

todd sharp's Gravatar @BirdDog - I'm working with Adobe to get this straightened out and hopefully find a more permanent fix for Vista users. I'll update this post when I know more.

Jay's Gravatar Worked fine, but this is something to do with Vista. I am using Vista Business on my laptop. If my memory serves me right the problem started after one of the updates from MS. It worked fine for me until then. Infact i had installed several AIR apps after downloading them prior to this. Vista grrrrrr...

Mike's Gravatar I'm have the same issues as others with loading stocktwits desktop - process step three dowload get ERROR 2032
I've tried the above steps with on luck. I do have tweetdecks which work fine. Is there a resolve fix for us VISTA users.

Mike's Gravatar Let you guys know I finally got Stocktwits Desktop loaded and running on VISTA. Has to turn my firewall off during download process, then firewall on with permission to allow stocktwits desktop to run.

Niall Flynn's Gravatar Cheers dude saved me a headache
